Koh Kret Island, located on the Chao Phraya River in the Pak Kret district, is mainly inhabited by the Mon ethnic group, who settled here in the 18th century when Thailand was taken by the Burmese. The island is nicknamed "The Island of Potters" due to the specialization of its inhabitants. Koh Kret is also a small paradise for gourmets, thanks to the wide range of desserts offered by the merchants of this artificial island. Local specialties include egg yolk-based foy thong, refreshing khao shar and khao lham, a glutinous coconut-scented rice cooked in bamboo canes. It's easy to get around the island on foot or by bike, as it's closed to traffic. Please note that most shops are only open at weekends.
