With its 184 km2 and 400,000 inhabitants, Beni is the third-largest city in North Kivu. Crossed by several rivers, the town is built on a plateau of small hills to the south and a plain to the north. It lies to the north of the Virunga National Park, on the plateau of Mount Ruwenzori. Beni is a dynamic commercial crossroads, even if this dynamism is still too often disturbed by armed gangs intent on sowing discord and plundering natural resources. A tourist town, Beni boasts a zoo, river waterfalls and is close to Virunga Park. The main language is Kiswahili.
