Many cities of ancient or more recent origin have grown up on the banks of the beautiful river. This is the case of Ulm (121,000 inhabitants), most of which is located on the left bank of the Danube, where it meets the Iller. This city on the road from Stuttgart to Munich, on the Bavarian border, was very commercial in the Middle Ages. The medieval quarters still bear traces of the prosperous guilds. Almost three quarters of the town was destroyed by bombing during the Second World War, but it has managed to rise from its ashes and to develop the old fishermen's quarter where there are many hotels and restaurants. And the old town of Ulm is famous for its record: the spire of its Gothic cathedral, which was spared, is the highest in the world at 161.5 metres... In Ulm the river is completely navigable and a beacon indicates that one is 2,586 kilometres from the mouth. Ulm forms a conurbation with Neu-Ulm, a new town in Bavaria on the right bank of the Danube. For a pleasant stroll, lose yourself in the Fishermen's and Tanners' district, the most touristic part of the city. In the vicinity of the Münster and in the Fischerviertel you will find the most restaurants - Swabian cuisine, of course, but also more varied addresses.
