Murnau am Staffelsee is like many Bavarian villages in the south of the state: peaceful and enjoying the beautiful alpine scenery nearby. This small town has about 12,000 inhabitants (25 km from Oberammergau and Garmisch-Partenkirchen). It was completely rebuilt in the 19th century after a huge fire destroyed all its medieval buildings. Until the First World War, it was the refuge of avant-garde artists and intellectuals from Munich: painters in particular, such as Vassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) as well as members of the expressionist movement Der Blauer Reiter (The Blue Rider) Gabriele Münter, Alex Jawlensky or August Macke.
