Kelheim lies at the confluence of the Altmühl and Danube rivers. Louis I, Duke of Bavaria, also known as Louis of Kelheim, was born here and stabbed to death on the town bridge in 1231. After his assassination, his successor Otto II moved his residence from Kehlheim to Landshut. Nearby, the Danube enters its first gorges. It meanders peacefully between the white cliffs that rise more than 100 m above its waters. Kelheim is famous for two major monuments: the Weltenburg Abbey, one of the oldest still brewing beer today, and the Befreiungshalle, a pretty rotunda celebrating the German uprising against Napoleon.
