At a crossroads, Durango has played an important role in the history of the region since the 15th century, both during the War of Independence and the Carlist Wars. From the beginning of the industrialisation of the Basque Country, Durango developed thanks to the iron industry. Today, it is a city with a population of 30,000 inhabitants that preserves an interesting historical heritage. You can admire the beautiful façade of the town hall, decorated with murals; the church of Santa María de Uribarri, where Gothic and Renaissance styles blend together; and the old palaces of Zabala and Etxezarreta, the latter housing the History Museum.
