The jewel of Portugalete (50,000 inhabitants) is the Puente Colgante, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a ferry bridge that joins the other side of the Nervión, from Portugalete to Getxo. A symbol of the industrial development of the region in the 19th century, this bridge attracts the curious, who once there push on to the city centre. The Casco Viejo has, among others, the 14th-century Salazar Tower (probably Portugalete's most emblematic building), the Santa María Basilica (in Gothic-Renaissance style, it houses a large wooden altarpiece) and a first-rate industrial museum.
