Founded in 1768, this small village on the banks of the Ottauquechee River is undoubtedly one of Vermont's most popular and charming. It has a year-round population of just 3,000, with many more visitors in summer and autumn. Since its inception, it has benefited from the foreign currency of its wealthy residents, including the Rockefellers; the historic buildings have therefore been conscientiously maintained, and the chic Woodstock Inn & Resort bears witness to the presence of a very wealthy clientele. All visitors appreciate the picture-postcard feel of this picturesque village. There are numerous walking trails(www.walkwoodstock.com), a plethora of shops selling local produce and charming, welcoming Bed & Breakfasts. Once again, Woodstock and its surroundings are best appreciated in autumn, although a visit is worthwhile at any time of year. The best of Woodstock can be discovered on foot. The town's architectural heritage is meticulously maintained by its inhabitants, and some of its homes are listed as historic buildings. In the 19th century, many of the town's luxurious homes were the homes of wealthy lawyers and doctors who made the town their home. Don't look for any connection with the mythical Woodstock festival: there isn't one, since it was held in Bethel in 1969, 60 km from another town called Woodstock, located in New York State.
