San Bernardino is home to a population of over 210,000. Located less than 60 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, it is considered to be the remotest suburb. Indeed, although the city is in an agricultural region known for its wines and fruit, including oranges and lemons, urbanization towards the west is uninterrupted until Los Angeles. From 1819 to 1821, San Bernardino was first a mission, whose name was given to him in memory of the Franciscan monk Bernardin de Siena (1380-1444). In 1851, the city was officially created by a settlement of Mormons that was established there. Much of this community exiled to Utah in 1857. In 1860, the city had a gold fever, although the precious ore was never found in significant quantities in the region. It was finally the railway, in 1883 and then in 1886, that allowed San Bernardino to develop.Thriving for decades, the city began to experience serious economic difficulties in 1994 when Norton's military base was closed (from San Diego International Airport). The loss of the 10,000 jobs that it generated - military and civilian - led to San Bernardino in an economic recession somewhat offset by the growth of the intermodal transport industry. Again in a critical financial situation in recent years, the city declared itself in bankruptcy in July 2012. In 2013, the Welcome Center and Convention and Visitors Bureau closed its doors due to lack of funds. For the same reasons, the famous annual meeting on Route 66 in September, Rendez-vous Back To Route 66, has been reduced from 4 to 2 days.Highway 66, which arrives from the north of the city by Cajon Boulevard and Mount Vernon Avenue (alignment of 1920-30) or Kendall Drive and North East Street (alignment of 1930-40), forms a straight angle west of 5 th Street, before heading straight to Los Angeles via fofofoon Othill Boulevard. With the alignment of 1930-40, we can stop to visit the Mc Donald's Museum, where the first fast food of the chain was built and the Route 66 Museum. On 4 th Street (alignment of 1920-30), some beautiful buildings are to be seen, including the magnificent California Theater, which was the last place Will Rogers in 1935.
