The city, which has a population of about 120,000, had an important mining activity until 1900, and then quickly turned to the cement industry, especially with the creation of the huge Oro Grande complex, further north. Despite a recent restructuring project around Route 66, which crosses the city as a main axis (D Street, Highway 15, Highway 18), Victorville has not managed to get out of the economic slump in which it has been immersed for many years.Besides the beautiful 1930 Rockfield Bridge that allows the National Trails Highway to cross the Mojave River, 3 miles north of Victorville, the last vestiges of Route 66 that can be found there are gathered in the Route 66 Museum (Route 66, D Street) . Victorville, which can be considered the last isolated town before reaching the sprawling suburbs of Los Angeles, is home to the headquarters of the California Route 66 Association.
