Essex, some 7.5 miles past Fenner, consists of only a few dwellings scattered across the desert landscape. At the corner of Sunflower Springs Road, however, the ruins of the gas station and the Wayside Market that accompanied it are still visible. Five hundred and fifty yards to the south, a roadside well once provided water in the desert for travelers. The well is still visible, with its stone top topped by a small wooden roof, but there is no longer any water.West of Essex, along the north embankment of the road to Amboy, hundreds of travelers wrote their names on or with the stones. This is an example of what is called a Public Art Corridor. Beware of snakes if you want to walk near the embankments...Fifteen and a half miles from Essex, an old 1950s rest area has been preserved on the side of the road, but without the four picnic tables that were there then. Several informational plaques on a semi-circular stand describe the history and geology of the area. GPS coordinates: 34°35'23.29" -115°27'10.34". Warning: in 2022, and a priori for a long time, Route 66 was cut off between Fenner and Amboy. The only option is to take the I-40 to reach this stage
