Founded in 1882, Kingman takes its name from the engineer who supervised work on the Santa Fe Railway. Initially created as a railroad depot, the town became a tourist hub and an important distribution and transportation hub for northwestern Arizona. Before it was decommissioned, Route 66 brought a significant windfall to the local economy. Some forty old buildings have been preserved, the most important of which is the 1907 Powerhouse, home to the Visitor Center and the Arizona Route 66 Museum. While not worth the detour, the town does make an interesting stopover.
