Chambers was named in 1907 after Edward Chambers, vice president of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. In 1926, the name Chambers was changed to Halloysite for several years because of a clay mine extracting this mineral nearby. The town regained its name in 1930.Today, the small town of less than 1,500 people marks the end of the few options available to the traveler to avoid taking the interstate from New Mexico. Beyond Chambers, old Route 66 simply disappears or runs through private property to Holbrook, 47 miles. We stop here to fill up the tank before taking the road again. Note however that Chambers is the fork in the road to Canyon de Chelly (83 miles north) by Highway 191. A beautiful destination but very far from Route 66.
