Alfred Rowe (1853-1912), founder of McLean in 1901, was a passenger on the Titanic, which sank on April 15, 1912. Legend has it that rescuers found him hugging his towel, freezing to death on top of an ice floe, with his gold watch still ringing! Today, the town of 800 inhabitants is known for its Devil's Rope Barbed Wire Museum. Just 200 meters away, following Route 66 (1St Street), you pass the completely restored 1929 Phillips 66 gas station (the first in Texas). An old tanker truck, the same red color as the station, sits on the delivery area. On the west side of town, you can stop for the night at the typical Cactus Motel or have a meal at the Red River Steakhouse.
