Shamrock is the first town you encounter when entering Texas from the east. It was once the site of oil and natural gas extraction discovered in the 1920s. Its name, which means "shamrock," perfectly reflects the Irish origins of George Nickel, the man who founded the town in 1902. With that in mind, it's no surprise that green dominates the signs and that the most important annual event is St. Patrick's Day in March. Shamrock is home to just under 2,000 people. Things to see here include the U-Drop Inn, a beautiful 1936 Art Deco building that now houses the Chamber of Commerce, as well as the Pionner West Museum, located in the former Reynolds Hotel, a typical 1920s hotel, and the adjoining former Magnolia Gas Station (at the corner of East 2nd Street & North Maden Street). Also check out the city's water tower (North Main Street & East Railroad Avenue), which dates back to 1915; it's 53 meters tall and said to be the tallest in Texas. If you believe in Celtic legends, you should know that a fragment of the real Blarney Stone (or Stone of Eloquence) from the Irish castle of Blarney in County Cork, is mounted on a stone pedestal on the small green space at 210 N Main St. It was moved from its previous location in the city (Elmore Park) to here in 2016. This magical stone is said to have the ability to give the gift of eloquence to anyone who kisses it upside down. Feel free to be flexible and try the exercise.
