Elk City was established in 1901 at the end of the Choctaw, Oklahoma and Gulf Railway. Its name comes from the Elk Creek that runs through the city, itself named after the Indian chief Elk River. It has its own Route 66 museum, designed as a real complex and in partnership with the 8 states crossed by The Mother Road. Before this must-see visit, be sure to check out Parker Drilling Rig 114 (204 North Madison St) which stands at the entrance to the city. This rig is, at 54 meters, one of the highest in the world. It was installed here in 1991, next to the Anadarko Basin Museum of Natural History, now closed.
