The small town of Weatherford was born in 1898, shortly after the Land Run of 1892 that launched the settlement of the Indian Territory, later Oklahoma. Weatherford is the hometown of astronaut Thomas P. Stafford. After participating in two Gemini missions, he commanded the Apollo 10 mission, which in 1969 was the second human flight to approach the Moon and the second flight to test the LEM. In 1975, he was the commander of the Apollo-Soyuz flight, the first space collaboration between the USSR and the United States since the end of the Cold War. Weatherford has dedicated an air and space museum in his hero's honor.
