Foyil, today almost deserted, is the birthplace of Andy Payne, winner in 1928 of the Bunion Derby, the great foot race between Los Angeles and New York that followed the entire route of Route 66. He won this incredible challenge of more than 5,500 km after a marathon of 573 hours. A statue in his honor is erected on the side of the road, near the entrance sign to the city when you arrive from the west. Note that the prodigious 20-year-old athlete at the time of his feat was from the Cherokee Nation. Four miles to the east, with a detour off Route 66, it is possible to visit the Totem Pole Park.
