Commerce, a former mining town, has a population of 2,500. It was here that Bonnie and Clyde murdered a police officer and kidnapped the local police chief on April 6, 1934.Route 66 (Highway 69) crosses it on the east side, with a slight drop-off on the south side of town by D Street, before finding Main Street, to stay as close as possible to the original alignment. It is at 319 South Quincy St that Mickey Mantle (1931-1995), a famous baseball player of the 1950s and 1960s, lived for part of his life. Not far from there, at 100 North Main St., the tiny Dairy King, dates from 1925. On the other side of the street, you can't miss Allen's Fillin Station (1929-30).
