The last stop before Kansas, Joplin is home to 50,200 people. The city was founded in 1873 and is named after Reverend Harris Joplin, a settler who established the first Methodist congregation in the area. In May 2011, Joplin was severely affected by a tornado classified as EF5 which devastated a 10 km long and 800 m wide corridor, causing the death of 158 people and injuring more than a thousand. The city grew thanks to the exploitation of lead and zinc mines discovered in the region and, much later, by Route 66. The town's notables settled in the northern suburbs, in Webb City, which still has some beautiful 19th century houses, while Joplin was reserved for the miners' housing.Coming into Joplin from the north on Route 66 (Highway 49 from Carterville and Webb City), we strongly suggest you take a right onto East Zora Street to follow the original Route 66 (1920-30). It branches off from Florida Avenue into pleasant residential neighborhoods and passes an old Philip 66 gas station converted into a barber shop (Dale's Old 66 Barber Shop) before joining South Main Street, mentioned above.
