Founded in 1842, Carthage experienced a bloody battle on July 5, 1861, shortly after the beginning of the Civil War, and had to be partially rebuilt. The 1895 Jasper County Courthouse is located on the main square (South Main Street). The nearby Battle of Carthage Museum (205 South Grant Street) can also be visited. Returning to Route 66, you pass the Boots Court Motel (107 South Garrison), built in 1939. Across the street used to be the Drive-Boots, a drive-in that thrived throughout the 1940s before being forced to close in 1971. The building is now a bank, but its exterior, whose original forms have been preserved, leaves no doubt as to what it once was. Just outside of town, the beautiful 66 Drive-In Theatre is one of the few restored drive-in theaters on Route 66. For those who are not averse to detours, visit Precious Moments and its chapel seven miles south of Carthage or, before arriving in Carthage on Route 66, Oak II, a recreated 1930s village. Two sites created by true enthusiasts.
