Stanton is a small farming community in the hills. It is named after Peter Stanton, who owned a copper mine in the area in the 1850s. In the past, the main road from St. Louis to Springfield was called "Wire Road" because it followed the military telegraph line. This road became the Missouri SR-14, which in 1926 became Route 66. Stanton is a good place to visit the Jesse James Wax Museum, the Riverside Wildlife Centre, and especially the Meramec Caverns, 3 miles away. The Toy Museum has been closed since 2009.
