St. Louis has a population of 293,000. Although it is only the 70th largest city in the U.S., its suburban sprawl is immense and, with a population of 2.8 million, Greater St. Louis (the eastern part of which is across the Mississippi River in Illinois) is the 18th largest metropolitan area in the United States. Recall, however, that Missouri's capital is modest Jefferson City (population 43,000).Since the 2000s, significant redevelopment efforts have been made (restoration of historic buildings and certain neighborhoods, Downtown, Soulard, etc.), creation of parks (including City Garden) and museums, organization of festivals, construction of a new bridge, the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge open since 2014... Don't be surprised to see the city still under construction when you come. However, St. Louis is best known for The Gateway Arch, a giant horseshoe-shaped structure 192 m high, built in 1965, and part of the Gateway Arch National Park (former Jefferson National Expansion Memorial). It is considered the gateway to the West and has become the icon of St. Louis. At its feet, there are several sites to see or visit: the Museum of Westward Expansion (unavoidable because in the arch complex), the Old Cathedral and the Old Courthouse.St. Louis has a lot to offer. Sports-wise, historically and dynamically speaking, there is bound to be a place for you in this city with strong French influences!
