It was in 1817 that families emigrated from Massachusetts and settled in the area. Much later, in the 1860's, the place took its present name in honor of A. J. Hamel, a farmer who had property in the area and decided to establish a mill. J. Hamel, a farmer who had property in the area and decided to establish a mill and a general store. It was in 1926 that Route 66 passed through the village and brought it a certain notoriety. Today, Hamel is home to just under 600 residents. Located at the crossroads of several major roads, it was forgotten when Interstate I-55 was opened. People still stop by Weezy's, formerly Scotty's Route 66 Grill
