Normal is the northern suburb of Bloomington and is just a stopover on Route 66 without much in the way of entertainment, except for the fully renovated 1932 Sprague's Super Service Station & Cafe on Pine Street. It was in this town that Gus Belt founded the very first establishment in 1934 where customers could watch their burgers and shakes being prepared. The chain he created after his success soon became very popular and passed through the hands of several companies. Steak 'n Shake is still very well known in the United States and today has nearly 500 locations across the country
