One of the most beautiful sculptures of Greek antiquity and various collections in a museum in Corfu Chora.
This renovated museum, housed in a modernist-inspired setting, still contains one of the most beautiful sculptures of Greek antiquity, the Gorgon Pediment (6th century BC). This terrifying creature crowned with snakes was enthroned on the pediment of the archaic temple of Artemis on the Kanoni peninsula. You will also find the famous Lion of Menecrates (7th century BC) and the archaic pediment representing the Dionysian banquet. However, following a large number of discoveries, it was deemed necessary to enlarge it and to better organize the more than 1,600 pieces that make up the institution's permanent collection.
Overall, the rooms focus on different aspects of the daily life of the islands, from the Paleolithic to the end of Antiquity. Funerary customs, religious rituals, political organization, trade and economic activities, and arts and traditions are all presented in depth after the museum's complete renovation.
The exhibits are presented on two levels. The first floor houses the prehistoric collection and discoveries related to the foundation of the ancient city during the period of Dorian colonization and during its contact with other powerful Greek cities. The rooms on the second floor offer a historical tour of the island, from the Archaic period to the Roman period. Most of the exhibits were found in the city and in the cemeteries of ancient Corfu.
