A small, independent port area, San Pedro was populated by migrants from Portugal, Greece, Mexico and Yugoslavia. It was finally annexed to Los Angeles in 1909, when its port officially became that of the city. Nevertheless, San Pedro has not been swallowed up by the huge City of Angels, and has managed to retain its identity, unlike all the other districts on the coast. There's a special atmosphere here, almost like that of a small village where everyone knows everyone else.
