Construction of 6-Octobre City began in 1979, to meet the urgent needs of the capital's expanding population. The city was laid out in a straight line, stretching 15 km west of the Giza plateau and 30 km from the center of Cairo. Initially a dormitory town, it has developed, like Heliopolis, Medinat Nasr and Maadi in their day, a life of its own, independent of Cairo. Since the war in Syria, part of its population is made up of middle-class Syrians who have fled the country and lack the resources to go to Europe or America. It can be reached by cab or bus from Cairo.
