Located 200 kilometres from Alexandria and 85 kilometres from Cairo, Zagazig is one of the major university cities of the Nile Delta. It was built in 1830, north of the archaeological site of Boubastis. It is the birthplace of Colonel Orabi who led the revolt against British claims in 1882; Khedive Ismaïl let him do so but the price he paid was dismissal and exile to Istanbul. Zagazig is also known for its name, which is said to come from the "zigzag" of the railway network that passes through the city, according to urban legend that anachronism does not hinder. There is a very interesting archaeological museum, opened in 1992.
