Neighbouring Ile Ronde and forbidden to the public, it is located about ten kilometres from the coast and is classified as a nature reserve, although it is not subject to scientific study. Contrary to what its name might suggest, it is not home to any variety of snake, which is not the case with Ile Ronde, whose topography is not round. This wrong name would come from an error of the old cartographers who would have interchanged the two islands! Although there are no reptiles on Snake Island, it is home to hundreds of birds (mostly marine) whose droppings cover the top of the island with a whitish coat
