It is a crescent-shaped nature reserve which is the subject of a rehabilitation and protection programme and whose access is strictly controlled and in any case prohibited to the public. Like the nearby Snake Island, it is home to endemic flora and fauna, including the only species of snakes in Mauritius: the Schlegel's boa(casarea dussumieri) and the Dussumier's boa(bolyeria multocarinata), both in great danger of extinction. The island is also home to several endemic gecko species such as Günther's phelsume(phelsuma guentheri) and a large skink (lizard), Telfair's skink(leiolopisma telfairi).
