Museum worth visiting for its ancient and medieval collections.
Housed in the former Jesuit college, this museum, integrated into the kastro, is a little old-fashioned. However, it's well worth a visit for its ancient and medieval collections of finds from around the island. Hall II (at the entrance) houses Hellenistic funerary steles. Room I displays archaic statues of young men(kouros) and women(korai). From here, access is gained to the terrace, featuring marble coats-of-arms from the Frankish period and a 4th-century BC mosaic from Aplomata depicting a Nereid riding a bull, with deer and peacocks at the corners. On the lower floor, in Room III, classical and Roman statues are grouped together. Hall IV is the museum's centerpiece, with the Cycladic (3200-2300 BC) and Mycenaean collection occupying half the building's floor space. This is the2nd largest collection in the country after that of the National Archaeological Museum in Athens. Of particular note are the Cycladic statuettes of women in white marble, and a superb clay vase. Rooms V and VI contain objects from the Archaic period. Rooms VII to IX house small objects from the Geometric to Roman periods, including Roman glassware. Finally, in Room X, funerary stelae and Roman frescoes are on display. The courtyard also features a mosaic depicting the abduction of Europa by Zeus transformed into a bull.
