TOUR OF MEDIEVAL ALENÇON
Alençon was the first French town to be liberated by the French army, thanks to General Leclerc’s Armored Division.
The first French town liberated by the French army thanks to General Leclerc’s 2nd armoured division, Alençon lived through the Second World War in its flesh. During the occupation, the castle of the Dukes was used by the German police as a place of torture. At the liberation, Leclerc’s headquarters were established in the present Rive Droite restaurant and a statue representing him was built a few meters away. More widely, the Alençon region has several places of memory: in La Galochère, near Condé-sur-Sarthe, a monument in memory of resistance fighters shot, and in the forest of Ecouves, the Gateys necropolis houses a military cemetery. Many other places, often little known, bear witness to this page of local history. Unlike other cities, Alençon was passively liberated and little bombardment, which explains why its built heritage has been preserved.
