Lacq and its industrial area... From the outset, as soon as someone arrives in this commune, the place surprises him! The smell of gas, huge flares and chimneys invade the space, smoke escapes... This surprising territory combines rurality and industrialization. A brief look back shows the local impact of this first drilling, in 1949, undertaken by the SNEAP and its "black gold gush" which, after a period of adaptation, proved to be of rare intensity with, in 1957, 32 wells brought into operation in situ. The Lacq basin was born! From natural gas to bioethanol, it was only a short step and in addition to the Total group, based in Lacq, three other divisions make up this industrial basin, specializing in thiochemicals - Arkema's plant in Mourenx -, pharmaceuticals, phytosanitary products and cosmetics with an international reach. All these spin-off activities allow us to approach the turn of the year 2013 more serenely, as the mining of the deposit has been completed since October 14. This is the end of a story that revolutionized the life of the entire region for sixty-two years. But fortunately it does not stop there, thanks to a strong and diversified activity: 500 companies including Soficar, a Japanese group that manufactures 15% of the world's carbon fibre, a unit for manufacturing bioethanol from corn (Abengoa) and an 80 megawatt gas-fired combined cycle power plant. From extraction chemistry, the Lacq basin has turned towards fine and green chemistry, thus reconciling the industrial and agricultural worlds for the benefit of sustainable development.
