Or "Madani", as called the premises. The city was founded around five centuries ago in the context of the emergence of the power of the Founj, but above all of the expansion of Islam beyond the nilotic confluence. A religious Sheikh of the name of Madani would have built, towards the end of the th century, a Muslim teaching centre at this pleasant location along the Blue Nile. A neighbour of Sennar, the town was used by Ismail Pasha, son of Egypt's Khédive Méhémet-Ali, as a base in 1821 before he left the capital of the Founj Sultanate. From condominium, the city is the headquarters of the Gezira Project (Gezira Scheme; see box), which gives it a certain aura in the field of Sudanese agriculture and assures it of substantial revenue.Wad Medani is the capital of the state of Gezira. The city is located on the east road when you go from Khartoum to Gedaref, Kassala and Ethiopia. It is also a forced step to go to Sennar. So you may need to stop it. In this case, do not miss to walk along the banks of the Nile, the main attraction of this city of more than 300 000 inhabitants. In fact, Wad Medani is the largest city in the capital. It has several small churches. By walking, especially along the Nile, we measure the decline of the "Arab" atmosphere in favour of a more "African" atmosphere as you move away from Khartoum to the south.
