No one comes to Kassala by chance. The city is standing away from large regional roads and seems to be an end of the world. This is at least a tip of the Sudan. Kassala is a border town with Eritrea, 30 km away.It was founded in the Egyptian invasion of Sudan in the same way as Khartoum, as a military outpost, this time looking to Ethiopia. Kassala was briefly occupied by Italian troops, present in colonial Eritrea during the mahdistes wars at the end of the th century and at the beginning of the Second World War. The city then welcomed many refugees during the Ethiopian civil war, but also the rear base of Eritrean combatants seeking independence against Addis Ababa.Nowadays, it is rather the young married who come to Kassala to draw the fortune of a good fertility at the foot of the Thaka Mountains, a geological originality in the middle of the plains, which announces, more to the southeast, the Simian Mountains of Ethiopia. For a taste of the Horn of Africa, for its cultural diversity, for its little known beauty, to experiment with a moon of Sudanese honey, for all this, Kassala deserves a detour.
