Located at 400 m altitude on the plateau of the Zerhoun massif, 62 km from Fez and 33 km from Meknes, the ancient city of Volubilis has the most extensive and best preserved Roman ruins in Morocco. The best combination is to book a half day to visit Volubilis. The main interest of the city lies in the state of conservation of its numerous mosaics, testifying to its ancient prosperity. A real open-air museum where you can contemplate columns and ancient arcades lost in the heart of a vast plain. Not to spoil anything, the road from Fez is magnificent. To get to the Volubilis ruins, it is best to take a large shared cab, or to hire a tourist cab that can wait for you on the way back. Count around 500 DH for a tourist cab for the day, or 300 DH for the return trip for the big cab. Volubilis is not served by any direct bus, so you will have to take the bus that leaves in the direction of Moulay Idriss and get off at the junction, just before the holy city. From there, you will have to walk for about 25 minutes. For the return trip, do the opposite or ask the motorized tourists. The site of Volubilis is open every day from sunrise to sunset. Access around 70 DH per person. If you want more details, you can hire the services of an official guide. Count around 200 DH. Bring a bottle of water and a hat.
