Sefrou, a small town perched high up in the mountains, makes a pleasant excursion from Fès, especially if you're touring the Kandar massif. An ancient town, it is said that Moulay Idriss took up residence here before founding Fès, taking advantage of the opportunity to convert the Berber tribe to Islam. In the 13th century, the town became home to a Jewish colony, of which a mellah and cemetery remain. The town's charms lie in its crenellated ramparts, surrounding a pleasant medina. You can walk along the Oued Aggai, which is crossed by small bridges. The medina is still very traditional, with its vegetable souk.
