The imperial city of Morocco, Fez is a thousand-year-old city that combines refinement, tradition and a change of scenery. It boasts the country's largest and most impressive medina. The city was founded by Idriss I, who also founded Morocco as a single, independent kingdom. It was then the religious capital of a country where Islam has always been the state religion. The Karaouiyine University, founded in the 9th century, reached such a level of influence that Fès was nicknamed the "Athens of Africa". When families of merchants and Jews settled there, it quickly became the richest city in the country and an essential commercial crossroads. A visit to Fès el-Bali, with its medieval origins, will reveal traces of the greatest dynasties, from the Almohad walls to the Merinid medersas. From their prestigious history, the Fassis have kept an ancestral tradition of trade and craftsmanship, from leather tanning to the manufacture of the famous blue pottery on a white background, which is their pride and joy. But Fès also faces many challenges. Its one million inhabitants have remained confined to the historic city walls, creating pollution and sanitation problems. In 1980, Unesco declared the medina of Fès el-Bali a World Heritage Site, and began restoration work. In the heart of the medina's 10,000 alleyways, 1,300 houses have been restored, and entire quarters paved and covered with moucharabieh.

Budget

Without being expensive, Fez, and Morocco in general, is not a paradise for the poor. The government has favored tourism for the wealthy in order to bring in foreign currency, hence the many luxury hotels in the tourist regions. Nevertheless, in Fez, especially in the medina, there is still a large number of hotels for small budgets, and you can eat in the small neighborhood canteens which are still very economical. The currency is the dirham (DH).

Procedures

For French, Belgian, Swiss and Canadian nationals wishing to visit Fez, a valid passport is required for any individual stay. An identity card may be sufficient for a stay organized by a travel agency, as an exception. However, knowing that the passport will be needed to make currency exchange or to fill out a hotel form at the reception, it is strongly advised to leave with it! No visa is required for any stay in Fez and Morocco of less than three months.

Health

There is no longer any malaria in Morocco, but you should still protect yourself from mosquito bites. Vaccinations against tetanus, diphtheria, poliomyelitis and hepatitis A (unless you are immune) are recommended for a trip to Fez. The more cautious and adventurous should add hepatitis B and typhoid fever. In case of illness, contact the French consulate in Fez. They will help you, accompany you and provide you with a list of French-speaking doctors. In case of a serious problem, the consulate will also inform the family and decide on repatriation. Water is not drinkable in Fez. Prefer mineral water bottles.
