This village was a gathering place for the Innu nations in the 17th century, a fur-trading post from 1676 onwards - a visit to CHAM is recommended to find out more - and a Jesuit mission. It owes its name to Louis Desbiens, founder of the first paper mill in 1896. It is best known for its grotto, the Trou de la Fée, a site converted into a park and offering caving activities, zip lines, footbridges, hiking trails, an immersive show and more. The Métabetchouane River is a favorite spot for fishing for ouananiche, a succulent freshwater salmon, or for rafting.
