70 km south of Kandy and 162 km east of Colombo. Nuwara Eliya is a small high altitude resort at 1,889 m. From the 19th century until independence, it was the preferred refuge of the English settlers who left Colombo in the summer because it had become unbreathable. Despite its nickname of Little England, the British side of Nuwara remains only between the west of the city and the lake (Gregory Lake).
