70 km south of Kandy and 162 km east of Colombo. Nuwara Eliya is a small high altitude resort at 1,889 m. From the 19th century until independence, it was the preferred refuge of the English settlers who left Colombo in the summer because it had become unbreathable. Despite its nickname of Little England, the British side of Nuwara remains only between the west of the city and the lake (Gregory Lake). It is in this part that you will have to go to discover, in the old atmosphere of the old palaces, what remained of the colonial time. This is also where you can try your hand at golf and watch the races at the racecourse, especially the Governor's Cup in April during the New Year celebrations.Apart from that, Nuwara Eliya is best known for its cool climate and the exceptional beauty of its surroundings. The hills covered with tea plantations and crossed by a multitude of waterfalls form a magnificent panorama. Pidurutalagala, or Mount Pedro, located north of the city, is the highest point in the country (2,524 m). Whether you choose the city or the surrounding countryside, bring a sweater in all seasons.
