Hermance is a small medieval town by the lake and one of the most picturesque villages in the canton. The site has been occupied since the carved stone age, and traces of inhabitants from different periods have been found there. In 1471, Isabelle de Menthon built the chapel of the Visitation of the Virgin, known as the Sainte-Catherine chapel, a small gothic jewel which has been reconstructed today next to the church. After the first blow dealt by the Bernese occupation in 1536, Hermance did not recover and remained a modest village, part of which became part of the canton of Geneva in 1816. Today, it is a popular place for a walk along the lake.
