In 1831, nearly 30,000 passengers used the Canal du Midi and passed through the locks of the Somail, which between the 17th and 19th centuries was an important commercial and passenger port. The buildings still bear witness to this period: the chapel built between 1684 and 1693 received the nautoniers and travellers, and a mass was said on arrival and departure, the stone donkey-backed bridge known as the Pont de Riquet, the 1684 inn building was used for "la couchée", and the guard's house which was the former watering place for towing horses. Today, the trade has disappeared but travellers have stayed for the authenticity of the Somail.
