Boasting dozens of gigantic towers, symbols of French economic power, the La Défense business district owes its name to a statue paying tribute to the soldiers stationed at the gates of Paris during the 1870 war. Launched by the French government in 1958, the project, managed by the Établissement public pour l'aménagement de La Défense, rapidly became a reality, with the construction of the CNIT, followed by numerous towers and the Quatre Temps shopping mall. In 1989, the Grande Arche de la Défense was inaugurated. Today, gigantic towers continue to emerge, most often from prestigious architectural firms.
