Morondava (population approx. 70,000) has established itself as a must-see stopover at the end of a pleasant western itinerary, for all travellers coming to discover the baobabs and Tsingy. There are surprisingly good hotels, good restaurants and a friendly atmosphere. It's a regional economic center where the predominance of agriculture is evident right up to the entrance to the town, lined with large rice fields. In the Kabatomena basin, Cape peas, bananas, grapefruit, cotton and corn are grown... The hinterland is dominated by a savannah decorated by a unique variety of majestic baobabs. And don't overlook the charming village of Belo-sur-Mer, to the south, for a few days by the sea.Avenue de l'Indépendance, the main thoroughfare, is brimming with activity and lined with a variety of shops. The dhow port is also bustling with activity, as blue and red boats dock in an arm of the river. Here again, the sea is tinged with red (which explains the kingdom's name: menabe = very red). Offshore, the factory ships of the fisheries work tirelessly. At night, their lights add a mysterious touch to the waters of the Mozambique Channel. It is said that the town may well disappear due to severe marine erosion (the sea is advancing inland). In the meantime, the beach is a pleasant place to sunbathe and watch the sunset.
