A small prefectural city of about 20,000 inhabitants, it was nicknamed the "capital of ruins" after the harsh battles of July 1944 that left it almost completely destroyed. Saint-Lô has managed to regain its footing and stand proudly on its rock. An administrative city, its ramparts, its gentle way of life and its setting are worth a stop. The city is well served and is located in the heart of the department. In recent years, initiatives to make the city more lively and attractive have multiplied, with success. In addition to the commercial downtown area, the city has developed the banks of the Vire river which crosses it.
