This high-altitude resort of 36,900 inhabitants is nestled in the Shevaroys hills, amid coffee and orange plantations, 1,515 m above sea level. " Yercaud " means "the lake in the forest" in Tamil. Coffee cultivation dates back to 1820, when the Scotsman David Cockburn brought the first plant from Africa. In the 1840s, the British took advantage of succession disputes between the various ethnic groups in the hills to take control of the region. Yercaud can be a restful, cool stopover for a day or two. Pagoda Point, a hill topped by a temple dedicated to the god Ram, offers a fine panorama of the valley. Annamalai Temple, dedicated to Shiva and open only on full-moon days, is also a popular excursion destination, with its beautiful views. Lady's Seat is a popular spot for sunsets. On Shevaroy Hill, a small temple housed in a cave attracts villagers who come to pray to Cauvery and Perumal. The Rose Garden, a well-kept park, features a wide variety of roses and organizes a flower show in May.
