Church built between the and centuries, now a symbol of the 1944 liberation, with a John Steel mannequin in the bell tower.
Begun in the 11th century as a Romanesque church, it was completed in the 15th century, and has become above all a symbol of remembrance of the liberation of 1944. This is why most people admire the church: the body of American paratrooper John Steel can be seen hanging from the bell tower. Of course, this is no more than a carefully placed dummy. Steel pretended to be dead, his parachute hanging from the bell tower, until the battle died down...

Eglise de Sainte-Mère-Eglise 50480
L'Eglise de Sainte-Mère-Eglise est située en centre ville. Elle a été rendue célèbre par le film « Le jour le plus long » dans lequel le parachutiste allié resta accroché, ce qui est inspiré de la réalité. Grande extérieurement, cette magnifique église m'a semblé assez petite intérieurement. Très beaux vitraux, dont certains reprennent des éléments de l'Histoire (parachutiste, etc..) et un chœur absolument remarquable. A visiter impérativement selon moi !

Elle marque les esprits
Ayant visité la région étant enfant, le célèbre parachutiste pendu au clocher avait marqué mon esprit. Aujourd'hui, il témoigne toujours de cet épisode marquant. Par ailleurs, l'église elle-même est jolie à visiter.
