Known abroad as Prizren, the city is called Prizren/Prizreni in Albanian and Призрен/Prizren in Serbian. It has a population of 85,000 and 240,000 with the rest of the municipality (82% Albanians, 9.5% Bosnians and 5% Turks). The city is located 39 km northeast of Kukës (Albania), 73 km southeast of Peja/Peć(via Gjakova/Đakovica), 81 km southwest of Pristina.Former historical capital of Kosovo, Prizren is the second most populated city in the country. It is also the most touristic thanks to its well-preserved Ottoman heritage. It enjoys a flattering setting with the Šar mountains in the background and the Prizrenska Bistrica (or Bistrica e Prizrenit) drawing nice meanders into the center. Almost spared by the war in Kosovo, it was however the epicenter of the anti-Serbian uprising of March 2004 which caused the destruction of part of its precious medieval heritage and the exodus of its Serbian minority (7% of the population in 1991, less than 1% today). Its name comes from the Old Slavonic при-зрѣти(pri-zreti) meaning "view from afar" in reference to the fortress of Emperor Stefan Dušan which dominates the city and was the first capital of the Serbian Empire in 1346. It came under Ottoman control in 1455 and flourished as a religious, administrative and commercial center, attracting merchants from Croatia. Home of the Albanian nationalist movement of the League of Prizren against the Ottomans, in 1878, it still has a very influential Turkish population
