This hamlet of about 100 inhabitants is known by three names: Ново Брдо/Novo Brdo in Serbian (pronounced "novo brudo") and Novobërdë/Novobërda or Artanë/Artana in Albanian. It belongs to the municipality of Novo Brdo/Novobërda. This one counts approximately 9 000 inhabitants (60 % of Serbs, 39 % of Albanians and 1 % of Roma) and has for seat the close village of Bostane/Bostani (approximately 400 inhabitants) From there, the panorama is superb: as far as the eye can see, nature. Perched on an extinct volcano at an altitude of 946 m, the hamlet is home to the prestigious fortress of Novo Brdo ("new hill" in Slavonic). Built by King Milutin in 1295, it defended the most valuable gold and silver mines of the kingdom of Serbia and was the last bastion of Kosovo to fall to the Ottomans in 1455. Novo Brdo/Novobërda is today the smallest municipality in the country (204 km2) and a Serbian enclave recognized since 2013. It is also the supposed site of Artana, the capital of the ancient kingdom of Dardania. While there is no serious evidence to support this theory yet, the municipality was renamed Artana in 2001. Little affected by the war in Kosovo, it remains very poor with an economy mainly focused on agriculture. But the exploitation of a lead and zinc mine has resumed and the inhabitants are now counting on the reconstruction of the fortress to attract tourists.
